06How to Read EPA and DHA Amounts on a Label

Not all omega-3 supplements are equal in DHA content. Here is what to look for:

  • Find the Supplement Facts panel, not the front-of-pack marketing.
  • Look for the individual line items: DHA (mg) and EPA (mg).
  • A label that only says "1,000 mg fish oil" or "1,000 mg omega-3" does not tell you how much DHA is in the dose. The actual DHA could range from 120 mg to 500 mg depending on the product.

07Bleeding Risk, Calories and Product Quality

Caloric load. Fish oil is calorie-dense. For a small senior dog on a weight-management plan, the extra calories from a large daily dose of oil can matter. Factor supplement calories into the daily total.

Product quality. Choose supplements formulated for pets, with third-party testing for heavy metals (mercury, lead) and oxidation. Rancid fish oil can do more harm than good — store opened bottles in the refrigerator and discard any product that smells strongly off.

Drug interactions. Beyond blood thinners, high-dose omega-3s may interact with certain immunosuppressive or anti-inflammatory medications. Discuss any supplements with your vet before starting.

What DHA does not do. DHA is not a treatment for canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome. It does not reverse existing brain damage, cure dementia or replace veterinary management of neurological conditions.
