  • Weight loss without muscle loss is primarily fat reduction. A dog can lose weight while retaining muscle, or lose muscle while maintaining (or even gaining) fat.

The distinction matters because cachexia signals a medical problem that needs treatment, while sarcopenia calls for nutritional and activity-based support. Your veterinarian can differentiate between them using body condition scoring, muscle condition scoring, bloodwork, and clinical history.

Why Senior Dogs Lose Muscle

Muscle loss in senior dogs results from several overlapping factors, and in most cases, more than one is at work.

02Aging, Inactivity, Nutrition, Pain, and Disease

Hormonal changes. As dogs age, levels of growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), and testosterone decline. Meanwhile, cortisol—a catabolic hormone that promotes protein breakdown—may become relatively elevated. The balance between building muscle and breaking it down tips toward breakdown.

Neuromuscular degeneration. Motor neurons that signal muscle fibers to contract decrease with age, and the efficiency of nerve-to-muscle connections drops. Lost motor units mean lost contractile capacity, and the body's compensatory rewiring is imperfect.

Reduced activity. This is the single most modifiable factor. Senior dogs naturally move less—because of arthritis, declining senses, or lower energy. Muscles follow a "use it or lose it" principle, and inactivity accelerates atrophy. A vicious cycle develops: less muscle leads to less movement, which leads to still less muscle.

Nutritional shortfall. Older dogs may eat less due to dental pain, nausea, or reduced appetite. How to Recognize and Measure Muscle Loss

Early recognition gives you the best chance to intervene. Because sarcopenia develops gradually, side-by-side photo comparisons months apart can be more revealing than day-to-day observation.

03Spine, Shoulder, Skull, and Pelvic Landmarks

Visual assessment. Stand above your dog and look at its silhouette. Pay particular attention to:

  • Spine. In a well-muscled dog, the muscles along both sides of the spine form a smooth, rounded ridge. In sarcopenia, the spinous processes (the bony knobs along the backbone) become visible or prominent.
  • Shoulder blades. The scapulae become more angular and defined as the surrounding muscle thins.
  • Skull. The temporal muscles on the top of the head may visibly shrink, giving the skull a bonier appearance.
  • Pelvis and hips. The hip bones (iliac crests) and ischial tuberosities (sit bones) become more prominent as the gluteal and thigh muscles atrophy.

Palpation. Run your hands over the thighs, hips, shoulders, and along the spine. Healthy muscle feels firm and springy. Atrophied muscle feels soft and thin, with bone easily felt beneath.

04Body Weight Is Not the Same as Muscle Condition

A dog can maintain a stable body weight while quietly losing muscle and gaining fat—a condition sometimes called sarcopenic obesity. Conversely, a dog may lose weight from fat while its muscle mass remains adequate.

Veterinarians distinguish between the two using separate scales:

  • Body Condition Score (BCS) assesses overall fat cover, typically on a 1–9 scale.
  • Muscle Condition Score (MCS) evaluates muscle mass by palpating the spine, shoulders, skull, and hips. The WSAVA provides a standardized chart that grades muscle as normal, mild loss, moderate loss, or severe loss.

For dogs still mobile and relatively active:

  • Maintain regular, moderate walks. Aim for consistency—daily short walks are better than occasional long hikes.
  • Add gentle resistance: walking on grass, sand, or slight inclines; slow controlled sit-to-stand repetitions; walking over low cavaletti poles.
  • Swimming or underwater treadmill sessions are excellent. Water buoyancy reduces joint stress while resistance challenges the muscles.

For dogs with limited mobility:

  • Provide non-slip surfaces at home so the dog moves with confidence and stays active throughout the day.

When Muscle Loss Needs Veterinary Investigation

Some degree of muscle loss is expected in aging dogs, but certain patterns warrant a closer look.

07Pain, Weakness, Appetite Loss, and Rapid Change

Schedule a veterinary evaluation if you notice:

  • Rapid or asymmetric muscle loss. Losing muscle noticeably over days to weeks—or much more in one limb than the other—suggests disease, nerve damage, or injury rather than age-related sarcopenia.
  • Persistent pain or lameness that limits movement beyond what you would expect for the dog's age.
  • Significant appetite loss. Eating far less than usual can accelerate muscle wasting and may point to dental disease, gastrointestinal problems, or systemic illness.
  • Weakness or collapse. Hind legs giving out, difficulty standing, or stumbling without obvious cause.
